While the overall truck-involved fatality rates have had a downward trend over the past decade, the trucking industry continues to seek new, innovative methods to further reduce the number of crashes. Toward this end, ATRI engaged in a major initiative designed to study the effectiveness of truck driving simulators to target specific driving behaviors that have been associated with increased crash risk. These driving behaviors were previously identified in ATRI’s Predicting Truck Crash Involvement report. ATRI worked with several motor carriers to collect driver safety and training data and then analyzed the safety performance differences between new-hire drivers based on which simulator training was received at the time of hire.
