The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) collaborated with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) to collect detailed truck parking data from the 50 state Departments of Transportation (DOTs).
Information provided by state DOTs was paired with publicly available data, including truck vehicle miles traveled (VMT), miles of roadway in the National Highway System (NHS), and private truck parking space totals. State DOT data were collected in 2024 while VMT and NHS miles of roadway were calculated using data from the Federal Highway Administration’s 2022 Highway Statistics Series. Private truck parking spaces per state were sourced from the 2015 Jason’s Law report.
Additionally, the research team identified key metrics based on truck drivers’ priorities for parking amenities and safety features, identified across multiple ATRI truck parking studies. These include eight amenities and five safety features as described below.
Parking Amenities
- Restrooms
- Lighting
- Pet relief areas
- Trash receptacles
- Dump stations
- Vending machines
- Walking trails
- 24-hour security
Parking Safety Features
- Lighting
- Fencing
- Cameras
- Regular patrols
- Emergency call buttons
The sortable table below includes the following metrics for evaluating state provision of truck parking:
- Total number of truck parking spaces at public rest areas;
- Public rest area truck parking spaces per one million truck VMT;
- Public rest area truck parking spaces per 100 miles of NHS roadway;
- Annual rest area service and maintenance budget per parking space;
- Amenities and safety features offered at rest areas (as identified by states); and
- Public to private truck parking space ratio.
