Research Advisory Committee (RAC) Application

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) is the trucking industry’s not-for-profit research organization. ATRI’s primary mission is research to advance the trucking industry’s safety and productivity. The research that ATRI undertakes on behalf of the trucking industry is identified as an industry priority by ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee (RAC).

RAC members represent a diverse group of motor carriers of all sectors and sizes, professional truck drivers, industry suppliers, academics, law enforcement, and government representatives. RAC members are appointed to two-year terms by the ATRI Board of Directors.

ATRI’s RAC holds one in-person, two-day meeting per year, typically in the second or third week of March. The RAC also meets virtually several times a year to provide input on research studies and review progress on the selected priority topics. Participation in the in-person meeting is a requirement of membership as a virtual option for the annual meeting is not available.

By submitting your application to be considered for a position on ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee, please indicate your understanding of the RAC member requirements:

If appointed to ATRI’s RAC, your term on the RAC will be two full calendar years, starting January 1 following your appointment by the ATRI Board of Directors. If appointed, you will be required to attend the in-person RAC Annual Meetings. Those meetings are 2-day events held each March. Prior to attending each year’s annual meeting, you agree to thoroughly review the research proposals prepared by the ATRI team. Additionally, if appointed to ATRI’s RAC, you agree to actively promote ATRI’s research among your professional network and encourage your professional colleagues to support ATRI and participate in ATRI’s research.

The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has been engaged in critical transportation studies and operational tests since 1954.  ATRI is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., with offices in Atlanta, Minneapolis, and  Sacramento.

ATRI’s primary mission is to conduct transportation research, with an emphasis on the trucking industry’s essential role in a safe, efficient and viable transportation system.  ATRI’s research focus areas include: Congestion and Mobility; Economic Analysis; Safety and Security; Technology and Operations; Environment; and Transportation Infrastructure.

ATRI’s extensive experience covers a broad range of commercial vehicle operations including leadership and/or participation in numerous national freight analyses, technology research initiatives and field operational tests.

ATRI presently manages the U.S. DOT’s Freight Mobility Program, and has provided freight mobility and performance measures technical assistance to 31 state DOTs and 11 of the 15 largest MPOs in the U.S. ATRI has received top research awards from ITS America, TIDA, University of Minnesota and the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
